Couples and Relationship Counselling will give you and your partner a chance to explore the difficulties you are having and to look at ways in which you can improve your relationship. I will work with you to help you explore your feelings, values and ways of communicating with each other. Whether you are married, living together or in a same-sex relationship, it may be possible to help deal with your relationship difficulties in order to change the dynamics of your relationship, so that you can both have a happier and more fulfilled future.
Couples work is somewhat different from counselling and psychotherapy for individuals in that it is a more directive and hands on way of working, and tends to be shorter in duration. My job is to help you focus on resolving your difficulties in the here-and-now, rather than exploring each individual’s personal psychological issues. Your relationship is therefore my client. I will work with you to understand the presenting issues for you and what they mean to your relationship. We then go about either understanding and exploring or problem solving, with relationship exercises and specific tasks and changes of behaviour.
I offer a block of 6 treatment sessions whereby we explore a variety of issues including:
- communication difficulties
- sexual problems or issues with intimacy
- difficulties with each other’s behaviour
- dealing with the trauma of a break-up, separation or divorce
- financial problems
- children
- difficulties with family members
- dealing with the demands of work life and family life
- dealing with being in a relationship, whilst holding onto your individuality
- getting the most out of your relationship
As a practitioner, I will be more directive and actively involved in setting appropriate boundaries of behaviour. Furthermore, I offer a non-judgemental approach supporting you together as you work jointly to improve the quality of your relationship and achieve the best possible outcome for you.
